About the training 

The Economic Media Centre has a simple theory of change: by increasing the diversity of voices represented in the mainstream media on economic issues, we shift the economic discourse and help deliver more inclusive economic policies. 

Media Spokesperson Training is a practical, hands-on, two-day, free training that will equip you with the skills to proactively engage with the media – through print newspapers, online outlets, radio and television.

Who is this training for?

This program is designed for South Australians who have lived experience of economic injustice.  That may mean you have a low income, receive income support through Centrelink, live on minimum wage or have insufficient casual work to make ends meet.

The training is open to both individuals and people engaged with existing organisations and programs.

The curriculum covers the media communications skills needed to maximise campaign success, including:

  • understanding and managing journalist expectations
  • camera readiness – tailored interview simulation for TV, digital and press conference
  • drafting compelling story arcs and sound bites
  • using the media to challenge narratives and reframe issues.

Participants will receive expert media coaching and the opportunity to connect and share with a supportive cohort of South Australians.  The training includes a mix of practical media skills and interview practice and tailored content.

When you finish the training you will receive ongoing support through follow-up mentoring to help you identify newsworthy media angles, engage with journalists and place stories in mainstream media.

About the Economic Media Centre

The Economic Media Centre is shifting the economic story in the Australian media – amplifying grassroots voices with an ambitious vision for a fair and inclusive economy.

The Economic Media Centre is partnering with Wyatt Trust in South Australia to  increase the representation of people experiencing poverty in the mainstream media, together we will challenge the prevailing beliefs that perpetuate inequality and poverty.

  • We encourage First Nations People, people from under-resourced communities, people living with disability and unwaged people to apply.

  • This training will be held via Zoom.
