We Support a First Nations Voice to Parliament enshrined in the Constitution

23 Feb 2023

Wyatt is deeply committed to the process of reconciliation. In 2017 Wyatt accepted the invitation from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to stand by the Uluru Statement From The Heart. Having a First Nations Voice enshrined in the Australian Constitution, and a Makarrata Commission to supervise treaty and truth, are steps we believe will strengthen relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous peoples, for the benefit of all.

Voice, Treaty and Truth are three planks of the Uluru Statement, and the path to achieving each will look different. The federal government has prioritised Voice through a referendum on constitutional recognition and a required advisory body, while also making progress on Treaty and Truth. This is an immediate opportunity before us all as a nation, and a clear pathway to achieving all elements of the Uluru Statement.

Later this year every Australian over 18 will vote on whether the Constitution should be amended to include First Nations constitutional recognition through an advisory body (The Voice) that will provide advice directly to the Parliament on issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Wyatt supports a constitutional change to establish The Voice.
